"Something beautiful"

"Something beautiful"

I’m sure most people are aware of the political turmoil and social movement Hong Kong is going through. This is a picture I took on 6th June, 2019, in the very early period of what is to become one of the biggest fights defending freedom and human rights for the people of Hong Kong— whereby a large peaceful protest march in delivering a stunning repudiation of the government’s controversial extradition bill. It was a beautiful experience, witnessing 2 million Hong Kong people from all walks of life coming together first hand,  bringing the city to a complete standstill as masses marched to charities the chief executive’s refusal to withdraw or apologies for the bill. I felt the desperation, fury and unity of my people against the wave of political persecution, fighting for our human rights and freedoms which are on the brink of collapse.

Architecture: The Express Rail Link of West Kowloon Terminus

The Express Rail Link of West Kowloon Terminus connects Hong Kong to the National High Speed Rail Network of Mainland China. I have been to the Terminus a few times, and the most memorable parts of this architecture is definitely the terminal's roof-scape. It is a series ribbon pathways that spread from ground levels to the roof plane, morphing into a highly sculpted green garden. InTrees, shrubs and other greeneries are planted in beds along parts of the station's rooftopIt, creating a garden that serves as an observation platform along the south elevation viewing towards the skyline go Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Peak and encompassing harbour view. The roof’s circulation creates linkage between retail shops, nearby subway and public transit points. Its curved design creates apertures, bringing daylight as well as visuals by looking down to the  platforms.

"Discovering the unseen"-- A-level project

"Discovering the unseen"-- A-level project

Studying A-level Art has invariably enhanced my artistic skills and inspired me to look at things anew—I have always been curious with the versatility of Hong Kong architecture, especially its ability to overcome and utilise the strict limitations on space. I have developed a serious interest in exploring how lighting and space affect perceptions of a place. Therefore, my art coursework is built around the theme of “Discovering the unseen”. I relish making observations and analysis of even ordinary aspects in our daily lives in order to open up my mind to new ideas for inspirations. For example, I created a variety of different sized cubes and models using mesh metal, a seemingly uninspiring mass-produced material. Having experimented with their structure and lighting, I photographed and highlighted creative responses generated through the shadows, perspectives and negative spaces. I am fascinated by the intellectual fervour of understanding characteristics of mesh as a material and the creativity applied to it.
